Speech rhythm is a striking phenomenon that permeates the entire linguistic code and can be interpreted as a fundamental hierarchically structured system which organises language and speech. The current paper is dedicated to a range of theoretical and historiographical issues, describing the nature of speech rhythm and its place in a language system. The introduction section of the research yields to a multidisciplinary property of phonetics, as well as verbal rhythmology and speech rhythm. The next part deals with the methodological framework of the paper and its certain research tasks. A major part of the present work briefly describes some issues, concerning the place of speech rhythm in the phonetic system, its interplay between prosody and intonation, and the hierarchies of rhythm-forming units. In conclusion, the possible trends for ongoing studies are highlighted.
